Spatial Engineering ITC, University of Twente

About

Hi, people call me with lots of names, Azza, Zadiv, Diva, Ravi, Sawung, Jadipa, Jack, Jacky, Zach. So just pick one and call me that.

I would love for people to define me as a father (very recently and I am so proud about it) and husband from a small town in Java, Indonesia. After that, then you may define me as my works: a geospatial data scientist who likes to build things.

I currently study at ITC, University of Twente, on Spatial Engineering. A, not so widespread, program with emphasis on using remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system GIS to solve wicked problems, problems too complex to solve by yourself. This aligns with my experience as I worked with many institutions and people before that I found often times RS & GIS are cool tools looking for problems to solve; instead of the opposite.

My experiences revolve around RS & GIS with much of the time I developed a location intelligence platform, much like BI but utilising spatial data more, and being a data guy, working with RS & GIS data to extract insights. I started to experience all these in my bachelor years where I was interested in remote sensing for geology, geomorphology, and disaster management; and somehow, I also was interested in remote sensing for city development. We did not have mandatory programming course at that time, but I decided to learn by myself for my bachelor thesis which was about lahar modeling for Kelud volcano post-2014 eruption. I started to learn (exhaustively) python and MatLab there by myself. From there on, I then worked as a data analyst, with bits in data engineering too, and data scientist. Most of my employers see me more of a data scientist because I am more into revealing insights from various data.

Because of the previous point, my employer in Bhumi Varta Technology also saw me as a problem solver, therefore promoting me to be a (lead) Product Manager for their main product. This role was new for me as it has many more business things and not just data. I learned a lot during this time. I led the development of our new platform, created features, and helped our clients expanding their businesses. One time my team assisted a coffee chain from having ~200 outlets to ~1200 outlets across Indonesia. We intricately suggested them what things to consider like the distance between outlets and what facilities like schools should be within their range.

But yeah, I am more of a data person. I get excited in exploring data, deriving insights; which is why now I am back into spatial data analysis.

Apart from my core expertise, I had a short spell in trying to build my own small enterprise, Nusadventure in 2018 until early 2019. We were offering unique, first-hand experience of Javanese culture for tourists. However, we did not achieve our revenue target and then we disbanded. I was interested in this because: 1) I want to try building a company, 2) my hometown is full of unique experiences and cultures, and 3) I have the privilege of being young, I want to experience running a business. But then I had to accept the ‘defeat’ and moving on.

Those are bit of story of my life. I hope you who reads this can understand a bit of my personal context and what I can do (and maybe cannot do as well). If you think that my profile is interesting for you or your company/organisation, please do feel free to contact me:
